Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a Fiesta

Ford Fiesta

Cinco de Mayo, which means the fifth of May, commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. It may be surprising to some but, in Mexico it is actually a relatively minor holiday.  However, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a general celebration of Mexican culture and heritage including: parades, mariachi music performances and street festivals.  We’ve scouted out a few fun things to do in the Laurel area to celebrate:

1. Dine at R&R Taqueria: It was selected by The Destination Guide as “The Best of Baltimore’s Authentic Food.” Visit for a taste of great tacos and authentic Mexican dishes that they serve every day. 7894 Washington Blvd. Elkridge, MD (410) 799-0001 http://www.rrtaqueria.com
2. Party at the Cinco de Mayo Celebration Kickoff at the Silver Plaza on Ellsworth Drive in Silver Spring, MD.  It’s today Fri, May 4th from 6:30-8:30 pm.  Highlights of the planned festival include:

  • Music & Dancing, Los Del Barrio mariachi band, Maru Montero Dance Company, A live Salsa band at Ceviche
  • Food & Beverage: Authentic Mexican cuisine, the Austin Grill Patio beer garden, stadium buckets with refreshments,
  • Family Activities: Arts & Crafts, Face-painting, Raffle for a guitar and other prizes, Giveaways

3. Enjoy the 20th annual National Cinco de Mayo Festival at the Sylvan Theater at the base of the Washington Monument, National Mall. It’s Saturday, May 5, 2012 from noon to 6 p.m. RAIN OR SHINE. The activities include: live performances of salsa, Mexican folk dancing, mariachis, and other dance and music. The children’s pavilion will also host arts and crafts activities where young people can make piñatas, braid hair, build dancing puppets, and play lotería (Mexican bingo) to win prizes.

What are your plans for Cinco de Mayo? Any fiestas in your future?
