Pre-Winter Car Care, Part III

Here we are again with some more Pre-Winter Car Care.  Today we are changing focus a little bit and instead of maintenance for your vehicle we are demonstrating the importance of a Winter Car Kit. The upcoming winter weather conditions can be life-threatening so, if you are forced in a situation where you have to deal with them we want to ensure that you are prepared.  The Winter Car Kit is in addition to our THE TOP 10 CAR FIRST AID KIT ITEMS YOU NEED TO HAVE so that you are prepared for winter weather in case of an accident or mechanical issue with your vehicle

Winter Car Kit

  • Nonperishable food & water: Some great nonperishable food items to have in the car include:
    • Proteins, fats and carbohydrates; they all provide energy.
      • Proteins: jerky (beef, turkey, deer) cured meats (once cured, a salami can be stored at room temperature until it is cut open. The curing technique ensures that meat is available year round.)
      • Fats: nuts, such as almonds are a great choice
      • Carbohydrates: dry cereals
    • Avoid caffeine, as caffeine restricts blood flow and cools your extremities.
    • Don’t let yourself go for long periods of time without food. That can lead to hypothermia, when your body runs out of fuel to burn.
    • Water is especially important in the winter. You will be expending much more energy and the dry air will dehydrate you much quicker. Drink water, LOTS of water.
  • Bag of sand/cat litter for additional traction
  • Gloves, earmuffs/hats, old coats, socks, etc.
  • Boots
  • Blankets
  • Hand Warmers are a great heat source if you are stranded in your vehicle for an extended period of time.
  • Jumper Cables are needed during the colder months as any preexisting problems with your vehicle’s engine, battery, etc tend worsen.
  • Windshield scraper
  • Small shovel
  • Distress Flag

Start putting this Winter Car Kit today so, that if you are faced with a situation in the dead of winter you are prepared for what’s ahead.

We think this is a great basic Winter Car Kit, but what else do you keep in your vehicle in the winter months? Let us know if you recommend keeping anything additional in your vehicle as the cold weather approaches by leaving your suggestions in the comments section below.

I like the winter car kit idea. Usually I will just have a blanket and some extra food, but now I know my “emergency kit” is lacking! However, I always winterize my car correctly by putting on my Nokian tires and bringing it in to the mechanic for a proper winter inspection. Thanks for sharing!
